That is the question some people have been asking since it was reported yesterday that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Prof. Moji Adeyeye as the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

The appointment was contained in a statement on Tuesday by Assistant Director (Press), Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mohammed Nakorji.

According to the statement, Adeyeye’s appointment which takes effect from November 3 is for the initial term of five years.

Professor Adeyeye is the wife of the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Olusola Adeyeye and will be the second female professor to head NAFDAC after late Professor Dora Akuiyili whose tenure received massive applause.

The statement read, “The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the appointment of PROFESSOR MOJI CHRISTIANAH ADEYEYE, as the Director-General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

“ Moji Christianah Adeyeye is a seasoned Pharmacist with a proven track record of accomplishments in Nigeria and abroad.

Prof. Adeyeye attended the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, obtaining a BSc in Pharmaceutics in 1976, after which she obtained an MSc from the University of Georgia in 1985 and a PhD in 1988.

Adeyeye, who has over 30 years’ experience, is the founding chair of Biopharmaceutical Sciences and professor of Pharmaceutics and Drug Product Evaluation at the College of Pharmacy, Roosevelt University in Schaumburg, Illinois.

As she steps into office, not a few people will be keeping tabs on the activities of NAFADAC under her control.

She was a professor of Pharmaceutics and Manufacturing for 21 years at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is a senior Fulbright scholar and 2008 AAPS fellow.

She has mentored over 15 PhD and MSc candidates. She has five patents, 55 peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters and books, and more than 140 scientific presentations. She is the founder of a socially-conscious start-up company, Elim Pediatric Pharmaceuticals.

Adeyeye is also the founder of a non-governmental organisation, Drugs for AIDS and HIV Patients, which is committed to prevention, education, care and treatment of children with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.

NAFDAC has had no substantive director-general for nearly two years.

Since Dr. Paul Orhii was sacked by President Muhammadu Buhari in February 2016, the agency was presided over by two acting directors-general:  Mrs. Yetunde Oni and Mr. Andrew Magbojuri.
