Nigerian artist Damini Ogulu, widely recognized as Burna Boy, received a notable seven nominations at the BET Hip-Hop Awards, which took place on October 3, 2023, and was broadcast on October 10, 2023. Despite his multiple nominations, Burna Boy did not secure any wins. The African Giant was in the running for categories like Hip-Hop Artist of the Year, Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Collaboration (for “Sittin’ on Top of the World” featuring 21 Savage), Best Live Performer, Song of the Year, Hustler of the Year, and Lyricist of the Year.
At the event, Kendrick Lamar emerged as the night’s big winner, while Ice Spice was honored as the Best Breakthrough Hip-Hop Artist. In a significant achievement, Black Sherif became the second Ghanaian artist to claim the Best International Flow award, a category previously dominated by Sarkodie.
As we look to the future, there’s hope that Burna Boy and other Nigerian artists will secure nominations and once again become Grammy Award winners. The 2024 Grammy nominations are set to be announced on November 10, 2023.
