The culture of cousins getting married to each other in the North is now becoming increasingly apparent. Though not a new norm, the tradition is grabbing more attention with more and more children of notable people tie get married to each other. On Friday, April 26, 2024, Sanusi Aminu Bayero son of the Emir of Kano, HRM Aminu Ado Bayero, and Rumana Nasir Ado Bayero, daughter of the Emir of Bichi, HRM Nasiru Ado Bayero tied the nuptial knot at their wedding held at the Kano Emir’s Palace. The royal wedding was officiated by the Chief Imam of Kano, Professor Sani Zahradeen.
The deputy governor of Kank State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who stood for the groom, sought the hand of Rumana from her ‘wali,’ Dan Iyan Kano, Ahmad Ado Bayero, and paid N250,000 as dowry. The wedding fatiha had in attendance dignitaries from far and wide. The groom graduated from MTI University, Cairo, Egypt, with BSc in Business Management in 2020 and is currently working with the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), while the bride is a graduate of Building Surveying from Portsmouth University, United Kingdom. Their parents are both sons of Ado Bayero, the Emir of Kano from 1963 to 2014 and the longest serving emir in the history of Kano. Aminu Bayero (Emur of Kano) s the second eldest son of their father, while Nasiru (Emir of Bichi) is his younger brother. Aminu and Zumanna Bayero’s wedding was just around the same time Nafisat Mangal, daughter of Katsina billionaire businessman, Alhaji Dahiru Bara’u Mangal got married to Muhammad Bashir Mangal —her lover who also happens to be her cousin.

Meanwhile, some public commentators have said that the culture, predominantly practiced by the Hausa Muslims is permitted by Islamic dictates. It is commonly adopted by the affluent class and royals in the North to conserve wealth and power in their circle.
