In a tragic incident on Saturday, August 26, 2023, an unidentified man lost his life after allegedly being shot by soldiers in the Ebute Meta/Otto area of Lagos mainland. The incident unfolded during a clash with individuals identified as ‘omo onile’ (landowners).
The soldiers had been deployed to ensure the security of Chinese workers engaged in maintenance construction along the railway tracks. However, tensions escalated when local boys attempted to obstruct the construction work.
According to a source from the area, the Chinese workers had opted for military protection over the police, believing that the police were incapable of handling the issues with the local boys.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, clarified that the jurisdiction for the incident fell under the Railway Command, not the police.
Meanwhile, another source within the police command expressed deep concern over what they saw as continued atrocities committed by soldiers in Lagos. They urged an end to the violence and the need for better identification of these soldiers during such missions to prevent further tragedies.
