The Labour Party (LP) is currently holding its National Convention at the Grand Season Hotel in Nnewi, Anambra State, amidst recent tensions with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The party had previously urged the Federal Government to protect it from further aggression by the NLC.
The NLC’s Political Commission had declared Julius Abure no longer the national chairman of the LP, following Abure’s claim that the NLC’s picketing of the party’s national secretariat led to the theft of staff salaries, which the NLC described as “sarcastic and pathetic.”
In a letter dated March 22, 2024, the NLC, through its solicitors Falana and Falana’s Chambers, addressed to the Chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, urged INEC not to attend the LP’s national convention. The NLC accused Julius Abure and his associates of planning an illegal convention in defiance of court orders, citing previous court rulings that declared the LP’s status and ordered inclusive conventions.
The NLC threatened legal action if INEC failed to comply with its demand to prevent what they considered a breach of justice and the rule of law.
