A Nigerian woman working as a TikTok content moderator in Kenya has been found dead under unclear circumstances. Ladi Anzaki Olubunmi, who had been employed by Teleperformance, a firm contracted to moderate TikTok content, was discovered dead on Friday, March 7, in Nairobi.
Her family, who had not seen her since she moved to Kenya in 2022, is now seeking answers. Ladi was found dead outside her apartment in Nairobi. According to CNN Journalist Larry Madowo, her coworkers claim she had been denied leave several times. Although she was entitled to one return ticket home every year, the deceased had not returned home since she arrived in Kenya. However, her employer Teleperformance, denies it.
Some of her coworkers also said Ladi had repeatedly requested leave but was denied. They claim she had been struggling with stress and exhaustion because of the demanding nature of her job. However, her employers have insisted that the claims are ‘baseless and untrue’.
Som of her colleagues are accusing the company of Olubunmi’s death, citing the company’s toxic work culture. One of her colleagues, who revealed that Teleperformance denied the late staff her leave days and work permit. According to the colleague, Olubunmi had been pleading with her managers to grant her permission to travel to her home country. “As per the contract, she is entitled to a return ticket every year, but she went home only once after begging and crying to the management. She didn’t have a work permit, like most Nigerian workers, hence they denied her the chance to go home after so many attempts.” -the colleague said.
The colleague added that the company failed to check up on her when she was absent from work last Wednesday, and it was only when a colleague visited her apartment on Friday that she was discovered dead.
