Moldovan international footballer Violeta Mitul, aged 26, tragically passed away in an accident, according to UEFA. Mitul lost her life earlier this week during a mountain hike with her Einherji club teammates. The unfortunate incident occurred when she accidentally fell from a cliff near Vopnafjordur’s harbor area.
UEFA released a statement saying, “The 26-year-old defender was involved in a tragic accident while on a mountain hike with club-mates.”
The Moldova Football Association also expressed its deep condolences, stating, “With deep sadness and pain, the Moldovan Football Association expresses its deepest condolences and deepest regrets. One of the women’s national team’s best players suffered a tragic accident while out with her teammates on a hike in the mountains.”
Einherji described Mitul as “kind, energetic, and an exemplary footballer” and announced her sudden passing with heartfelt sorrow. Mitul, who was born on April 3, 1997, in Moldova, had joined Einherji in the spring of 2023 and played a significant role in the women’s team during the summer championship. She was known for her kindness, hard work, and dedication as a team player and soccer player. Her untimely death has deeply affected the community, and thoughts are with her grieving teammates, coaches, and family.
Mitul was a prominent player for Moldova, earning 40 caps for her country and playing for various clubs across Europe. She had previously played for clubs in Spain, Italy, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan, and had achieved success earlier in her career by winning the Moldovan and Romanian Cups with Alga Tiraspol and Vasas Femina, respectively.
