Pastor Attacked by Gunmen in Edo State, Wife Killed

In a harrowing incident that unfolded on August 14, 2023, in Benin City, Edo State, gunmen believed to be hired assassins targeted Reverend Samuel Chinyereugo, a pastor at the God’s Vineyard of Grace Dominion Assembly. Tragedy struck as the assailants stormed the church premises located at 101, Upper Lawani Street, New Benin, Benin City, around 7:36 pm. The pastor’s wife, Peace, lost her life during the attack.

Reports indicate that Rev. Samuel Chinyereugo and his wife were driving to the church when they were pursued by the assailants. Upon their arrival at the church, the gunmen unleashed a hail of bullets, fatally injuring Peace and leaving the pastor wounded. Even the assistant pastor sustained head injuries in the assault.

Eyewitnesses revealed that some church members, including the assistant pastor, were engaged in a rehearsal outside the church as part of preparations for an upcoming program. The tragic attack occurred suddenly, sending shockwaves through the congregation.

The assailants made their move just moments after the pastor and his wife had parked their car. The chilling encounter involved three armed men, with one of them snatching a cross pendant from the pastor’s necklace. In a horrifying turn of events, the other two assailants opened fire, resulting in the fatal injury of the pastor’s wife. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries hours later at a hospital.

Reverend Samuel Chinyereugo expressed his shock at the incident, recounting that he had noticed a car tailing him earlier in the day. The same vehicle abruptly appeared behind him as he arrived at his church, leading to the devastating attack.

The police spokesperson for the state, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the distressing event. The law enforcement agency has launched a comprehensive investigation with the aim of bringing the culprits behind this heinous act to justice. As the community grapples with this shocking incident, the authorities are determined to ensure accountability for the senseless violence that has shaken the city.
