Peter Obi Slams Accountant General and State Commissioners for Holding Workshop in UK Amid Economic Hardship”

The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, strongly criticized the decision of the Accountant General of the Federation and the Commissioners of Finance of the 36 states to hold a workshop in the United Kingdom. The workshop, focusing on Public Financial Management and International Public Sector Accounting Standards, took place at Copthorne Tara Hotel, Kensington London, from March 4 to March 9, 2024.

In a statement on Saturday, Obi expressed his dismay, stating that the decision highlighted the insensitivity of public servants to the economic challenges facing the country. He called on Nigerians to condemn the action, describing it as unacceptable and deeply troubling. Obi argued that such decisions only deepen the culture of elitism and disconnect government officials from the daily realities of ordinary Nigerians.

“Nigerians must vehemently denounce and condemn the decision of Nigeria’s Accountant-General’s Office to hold a workshop in London. This decision is not only unacceptable but also deeply troubling on multiple levels,” Obi stated.

He further criticized the government for disregarding fiscal responsibility and prudent expenditure of public funds, especially during a time of economic hardship. Obi highlighted the need to prioritize domestic needs such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and poverty alleviation over extravagant overseas workshops.

Obi questioned the necessity and effectiveness of conducting a workshop abroad, particularly in an expensive city like London, when Nigeria has numerous highly qualified professionals capable of providing the required training and expertise. He emphasized the importance of leveraging local expertise and experience rather than outsourcing such activities to foreign countries.

Additionally, Obi raised concerns about transparency and accountability in government procurement processes, calling for a full disclosure and justification for choosing London as the venue, as well as how vendors and contractors were selected.

He concluded by urging thorough investigations into any hint of impropriety or favouritism in awarding contracts for such events, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in government expenditures.
