During an exclusive interview with actress Iyabo Ojo, Ayo Animashaun, the executive producer of the Headies Awards, explained the decision to host the ceremony outside Nigeria.
Animashaun highlighted the global impact of afrobeats, emphasizing that the Headies now serves as a global award honoring excellence in the genre on an international scale. He discussed the evolution of afrobeats artists into global sensations, selling out venues worldwide.
According to Animashaun, holding the awards in Nigeria wouldn’t provide the necessary exposure for the talented artists, hence the move to Atlanta, known as the Black entertainment capital.
When asked about a return to Nigeria, he mentioned a commitment to the current location for now, with potential considerations for the U.K. or UAE in the future but hinted at staying in the U.S. for the next year.
