South African DJ and record producer, DJ Maphorisa, shared how he got into the Amapiano sound. In an interview with Nigerian media personality Adesope Olajide (Shopsydoo), he revealed that Wizkid introduced him to Amapiano, a genre of electronic dance music originating from South Africa in the early 2010s.
Before discovering it, Maphorisa described Amapiano as an “underground and instrumental only” sound. He recounted meeting Wizkid in Pretoria while the Nigerian artist was in South Africa and later encountering him again during a scheduled performance, where Wizkid took notice of an Amapiano sound being played by a DJ.
Wizkid introduced a fresh sound to his friend, emphasizing the urgency to “Jump on it.” DJ Maphorisa highlighted the significance of staying tuned to evolving music genres. Meanwhile, WurlD teased an upcoming collaboration with Odumodublvck and DJ Maphorisa on social media, marking a first-time collaboration for these artists.
