Republican lawmakers in the United States have commenced the first hearing of an impeachment inquiry targeting President Joe Biden. Their focus is on investigating allegations of corruption involving the Biden family.

The allegations revolve around claims that Biden and his family personally benefited from policies he pursued while serving as vice president during Barack Obama’s administration from 2009 to 2017. Additionally, they accuse the Justice Department of interfering with a tax investigation of Hunter Biden.

The House Oversight and Accountability Committee initiated the hearing on Thursday, September 28. James Comer, the Republican chair of the panel, asserted that the probe had uncovered substantial evidence indicating that Joe Biden had leveraged his public office for his family’s financial gain. Comer referenced allegations concerning the foreign business dealings of Biden’s son, Hunter, stating that President Biden had misled the American people about his involvement in these alleged corrupt business schemes.

Republicans have been attempting to investigate the Biden family’s affairs since gaining control of the House of Representatives at the beginning of the year. However, Democrats have consistently criticized the impeachment efforts as politically motivated and lacking a solid foundation.

The White House has also rejected the corruption allegations, with a spokesperson characterizing the inquiry as “extreme politics at its worst.”

Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy initiated the impeachment process earlier this month, citing a “culture of corruption” surrounding the Biden family that had been unveiled through prior investigations. McCarthy labeled the allegations as involving abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption, and he emphasized the need for further investigation by the House of Representatives.

On the other hand, Democratic legislators, members of Biden’s party, argue that the impeachment drive is an attempt to divert attention from the legal issues faced by former President Donald Trump and to undermine Biden’s re-election campaign.

Notably, Trump, despite facing four separate criminal indictments, remains the leading candidate for the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential nomination, setting the stage for a likely rematch against Biden next year.

The Biden impeachment inquiry comes as McCarthy faces increasing pressure from the right-wing faction of the Republican party to take action against Biden.

It’s worth noting that Thursday’s hearing is not anticipated to feature witnesses with information regarding the Bidens or the business activities of President Biden’s son, Hunter.
